Hi John, sorry for the late reply. I’d definitely recommend checking out Park Slope Co-op in Brooklyn. Bananas from Peru may only be available part of the year but I’d start there. And also check out Equal Exchange for more ideas!

I’ve always suspected what you wrote. Also, Jennifer is right about the taste of “non-commercially grown” bananas in banana-growing countries.
It’s hard to find fair-trade organic bananas up here in Alaska, but I will try harder to find a new source for my banana appetite. I hope others try too.

I had an idea that this was going on but resorted to putting the blame on others. It seems that in the end I actually can make a difference by being a responsible (and informed) consumer. Thank you…

Since then we’ve tried not to buy the big corporation’s bananas so usually go without bananas. I wish it were easier to find fair trade bananas in our area!

While organic producers have limitations and there is no diversity of fertilizers and products to control pests and what does exist is more expensive. To produce a clean of ‘quality’ organic banana fruit such as a conventional banana is expensive. It is important that consumers understand that it is better to eat a banana with some superficial natural spots that a fruit clean carefully with agrochemicals. Many of the fruit with some natural spots and surface are discarded in the packing plants by which the producer does not receive anything, and is internally clean fruit. If this situation does not improve smallholder banana could be devoted to other activities. Best regards. Juan Carlos rojas llanque, researcher in organic bananas. bananaperu@yahoo.com

I’m longing for the day the government will subsidize fruit and vegetables production and totally abandon the dairy and meat industry.

What I read in 2007 was that banana farmers received about 50% of the cost to grow the bananas from Chiquita, Dole, and Del Monte. He replied that it would be against the store’s mission to sell such a product. So I am going to send the store this article and urge the store to live up to its mission.
